Competition details:
The simplest definition for literacy is the ability to read and write, but in total there are four strands of literacy:
- speaking
- listening
- reading
- writing
Literacy is about much more than reading books. We use our literacy skills every day of our lives. Here are a few examples:
- following road signs
- reading the newspaper
- filling in a job application
- checking your emails
- giving presentations
- using an instruction manual
- completing homework
- updating your Facebook status
- ordering from a menu
- listening to instructions in class
- texting a friend
- reading a bedtime story
Because of its important role in our daily life, our literacy skills affect our confidence, career prospects and social skills.
